New additions

We've been isolating with the best of them. An introvert's dream come true. Lumberjack dashes out every now and again to the grocery store. He won't let me go anywhere since I'm high risk. We're very lucky to have 10 acres. We can go outside and still be isolated which is the only reason we've survived with four kids and only an 1100 sq ft house. Of course there's plenty of chores and animals to take care of when it's not snowing.

This morning we got a call from the post office. Our chicks had arrived. Lumberjack jumped in the car and picked them up.

We now have 25 baby chicks in the brooder in the garage.  The kids are so excited.

I have to admit. They are pretty cute.

All of them were alive at arrival and we're hoping to keep them that way until they're grown. They're hard to count what with the moving and all. I think they're might be 26. Bonus chicken!

We'll be getting a couple turkeys, also, but they won't come for a few weeks.

We've been discussing this since fall but maybe this is the homesteaders version of panic buying?

All in all we're doing pretty well on our mountain. Hope you are all the same.

Experimenting with Epoxy

We have been working on some shelves over the past few weeks in between some of the other projects.  These shelves have a surprise.  There was a big crack in the wood, so I decided to try my first experiment with epoxy.  Watch the video below to see how it turned out.

With the weather warming, this may be one of the last big indoor projects for the season.  From here on out we will most likely be focusing on getting the garden planted and enclosures for new animals.

Thaw

The temps have been in the 50s this week and the snow is receding. The warmth and glimpses of soil is filling us with hope for spring. For gardens and planting. The itch to grow things is strong, but I know better than to give in. We’ll get more snow. Possibly a lot. Temps will drop again before we finally break free of winter. We will revel in the thaw though, grateful for this reminder that winter isn’t forever.

Wooden Cars from Scrap Lumber

Just uploaded a video on a great project: making toy cars from scrap lumber.  These cars are a simple project for beginning woodworkers and are always well received.  The other great thing about this project is that except for the wheels and axles, you can make these with stuff most DIYers already have around the shop.
